About Sopron University
Higher education in forestry, a long-standing field of research, forms the core educational focus of the university, which began as an institute established for mining and metallurgy training. The School of Mining was founded by the decree of King Charles III, signed on June 22, 1735, in Selmecbánya.
Maria Theresa laid the foundations for academic education with a decree signed on October 22, 1762.
A joint meeting of the Treasury and the Royal Mining and Minting Department in June 1807 discussed the establishment of the Forestry School alongside the Mining Academy.
Sopron University continuously focuses on education and research, developing its strengths guided by the vision and traditions of the University of Western Hungary and its predecessor, the Selmecbánya Academy.
The main goal of Sopron University is to further strengthen its research capacity and promote internationalization. The university plans to offer more programs through teaching in English.
